ranking songs from Billie Eilish’s debut album.

On a Saturday afternoon last March, I had someplace to be that was an hour away from home and so I decided to drive and instinctively put on Billie Eilish’s album that had just dropped a couple of days ago. I was only vaguely familiar with her music and thought that this trip would be a good time to listen to her debut album. What was bound to be a long, tiring journey thanks to the peak summer sun and unforgiving weekend traffic, turned out to be a mesmerizing experience. That is what good music does – it strangely makes dull experiences truly special.

Throughout the year, I, like many others, was in awe of Billie Eilish and her musical talent. So in honour of the Grammys tonight, here are top 10 songs ranked from my favourite Grammy-nominated album of 2019 – “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”:

10. 8

I disliked this song a lot when I first heard it. However, the most compelling songs are the ones that grow on you unexpectedly. This ended up becoming one of those. Oh, and the recent rendition of this song on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke? WOW.

9. goodbye

The last song of the album was a very good move – closing out on a mellow tune revisiting all the tracks. It’s got a very special feel to it, concluding the listener’s experience in an elegant way.

8. bury a friend

Just one word – the incredible beats. Alright, three words – the incredible fucking beats (Lol never mind).

7. my strange addiction

I had just finished watching The Office when I heard this song so of course, I was mind-blown with the timing before I could appreciate the song for what it is.

6. all the good girls go to hell

This is another one that grows on you and then you’re hooked. It’s a lot of fun and the music video is freaking sick. It was because of the video I had learnt about the Global Climate Strikes in September so that’s cool.

5. bad guy

Just one word – the incredible bass. Alright, three words – the incredible fucking bass (Lol I’m done).

4. ilomilo

This song is weird but not weird enough and it’s also cute and creepy. You know the perfect mix of all these things that make a song indescribably awesome? I really like this one. It was the first song from the album I was addicted to.

3. wish you were gay

The first line of this song never ever fails to put a smile on my face. It’s either the melody or the rhythm, just everything about this song warms my heart.

2. i love you

An incredibly beautiful song. It displays a gentler, less chaotic side of Billie and her soothing vocals in an ethereal atmosphere. It’s so pretty and so fucking heavenly. One of the best songs this year. Period.

1. xanny

I LOVE this song. So much. Her signature sound with elements of jazz work so perfectly together. It’s got a remarkably unique sound even for her style and is undoubtedly my favourite track from the whole album.

There you go! Ranking these songs was not an easy task and I take this responsibility very seriously 😛 Each song seemed to have its own time to shine for me last year, so selecting only five as my standard top five on the blog was certainly not an option.

I have always loved music, but falling in love with an entire album is not a joy I encounter as often as I’d like. So the feeling is always special ❤ Thank you so much for reading and hope you enjoy some of the music here. Have a great day!
